SUPER FOODS
Needless to say, all fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and healthy nutrients for the body. Here is a list of some of the more “powerful” foods that aid in fighting certain cancers and heart disease:
- Asparagus- contains more folic acid than any other vegetable; also contains potassium, fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and C.
- Avocados- High in Monounsaturated fat (good fat that lowers bad cholesterol) antioxidants, Beta carotene, and vitamins.
- Blueberries- blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and anthocyanin which is a cancer fighter.
- Broccoli- Vitamins A and C, beta carotene, and fiber; helps fight certain cancers.
- Carrots- 2 carrots every other day provide enough beta carotene to reduce the risk of stroke by half.
- Chili peppers- The heat source in peppers, capsicum, is an antioxidant; they also contain blood thinning properties which prevent strokes and lower cholesterol; helps protect DNA against carcinogens.
- Extra virgin olive oil- To be classified as extra virgin, the oil must have less than 1% acidity. Extra virgin olive oil must be processed from the first press of the olives using no heat; it is the most pure and unfooled around with, hence the name extra virgin. E.V.O.O. is high in monounsaturated fat, (the good fat) and antioxidants; it can reduce bad cholesterol and maintain or even raise the good cholesterol. Consumption of olive oil is linked to lower risk of chronic disease.
- Garlic- lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, and is toxic to invading pathogens and tumor cells.
- Oats- Oat bran lowers cholesterol and blood pressure
- Salmon- Salmon is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids that fight heart disease; contains calcium, magnesium, loads of protein, and B vitamins.
- Spinach- Spinach contains iron, magnesium, vitamins A and C and folic acid which helps control cancer and reduces strokes.
- Tomatoes-- Contains antioxidants and lycopenes which stimulate the immune system.
